Project Overview
The Town of Marana and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) are currently developing the final design for a new traffic interchange on Interstate 10 (I-10) between the existing Avra Valley Road and Cortaro Road interchanges. The new roadway will connect Twin Peaks Road, west of the Santa Cruz River, to Camino de Mañana and Linda Vista Boulevard on the east side of I-10.
Project Need
The need for a new I-10 interchange has been recommended in local and regional planning studies that date back to the late 1980’s. This project was included in the Regional Transportation Authority’s (RTA) transportation plan approved by voters in May 2006.
This Project will:
- Relieve traffic congestion in the Town of Marana and the northwestern area of metropolitan Tucson.
- Provide an infrastructure to aide the rapid growth of northwest Pima County. This area continues to exceed the current transportation infrastructure capacity.
The Design
The Design Team took into consideration public comments and feedback as well as findings from RTA planning studies to develop the new traffic interchange.
The Project will include:
- The extension of Twin Peaks Road across the Santa Cruz River with a connection to I-10. This will allow residents west of the Santa Cruz River to access and cross I-10.
- A grade-separated crossing over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
Timeline and Costs
- The Design Concept and Environmental Assessment was complete in late 2005.
- A public meeting was held in June 2007 to review the status of the new interchange, for more information visit the Public Outreach page.
- The Final Design was complete in summer 2008 and is currently undergoing the approval process.
- The Project is anticipated to go to bid in October 2008, construction to begin shortly after.
- Construction will take approximately 18-months to complete and will open to traffic in 2010, with aesthetic and landscape treatments continuing throughout the year.
- The total construction cost of the Project is estimated at approximately $82 million.
